BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) - A few weeks ago we shows you a robot that does certain surgeries. Now that same technique is being used to cut out cancer from diseased kidneys. It's all about a smaller incision, more precision and a faster recovery.
Doctors operating robotic arms are able to make tiny incisions in a patient's stomach. A magnified 3D view gives the surgeon increased depth perception and after only a matter of minutes he's able to find the caner.
"We're just removing the tumor itself and leaving behind healthy kidney tissue," said Dr. Michael Palese from Mt. Sinai Medical Center.
A traditional surgery requires a foot-long incision and patients need a week in the hospital to recover. This new technique allows them to go home after just two days.
