ROCHESTER, NY - Eight of the 10 most polluted beaches in New York state are located on Lake Ontario or Lake Erie.
That's according to a nationwide study conducted by the Natural Resources Defense Council.
The group looked at 350 beaches that were tested last year.
Pultneyville Mariners Beach in Wayne County on Lake Ontario was ranked the third-worst in the state in 2008, while Ontario Beach in Rochester was seventh-worst.
Environmentalists say water quality in the lakes is adversely impacted by storm water runoff, sewer-system discharges and other pollutants.
