TONAWANDA, N.Y. (WIVB) - Western New York is remembering a native son who served in World War II.
Army veteran George Messer of the town of Tonawanda, has passed away at the age of 88. He served under General Patton in World War II, and was part of the "Honor Flight" project, which we featured last year. Messer was awarded a Bronze Star for exemplary conduct in ground combat in the European Theater while under Patton's command. Messer is survived by eight daughters.

The Honor Flight series was the touching story of veterans traveling to see the World War II monument in Washington for the first time. You can see more stories and videos of veterans here.
