Getting in shape can be difficult and expensive

BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) - Getting in shape these days can be difficult and expensive with high monthly gym fees.

But if you're motivated, you can get a gym workout at home for less than $20.

Working out at a gym doesn't work out for everyone, like UB senior Kellie Mazur.

"I used to be a member of a gym, but with school and work I found it hard to get there, but still paying for it," said Mazur.

Bob Bateson owns Body Blocks Fitness Center in Buffalo.

He knows going to the gym isn't for everyone, but says you can still get a good workout at home. All you need is a workout rubber band.

Bateson said, "It's something inexpensive, simple to do and creates resistance."

And done correctly, resistance training can burn three times more calories than just cardio alone.

He started Kellie out with four exercises.

First, a shoulder press for the chest, with the band around your back.

Bateson said, "See how she rolled her shoulder forward, we don't want that to happen, we want shoulders back, chest up right there."

Next, the triceps.

This time wrap the band around a door knob, grab it with both hands and walk away until there is tension, lift elbow and push.

"Take arms all the way back, elbows up, not going to move elbows and shoulders stay in one place," Bateson advised.

For your back, keep the band on the knob, turn around, knees bent, chest up, shoulders down and pull back.

"Again pull, don't let elbows flair out, pull back along your side," Bateson said.

You can work your biceps in this same position.

"Alignment is hand elbow, shoulder," said Bateson.

Finally to workout your thighs, gluts and hamstring, step on the band, feet shoulder width apart, bring the band above your elbow and grab it palms forward and sit back, not letting your knees go past your feet.

Bateson said, "Very natural reaction, sit back there squeeze butt on way up."

Kellie is sold. "I think cause I can just hook it onto the door knob and watch my favorite show and get quick workout in too, so I think I'm more likely to do it," she said.
