Tips and secrets on how to save money on wedding

BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) - When planning a wedding, all the little details really add up.

News 4's Melissa Holmes found some tips and secrets on how to save money on wedding accessories.

Something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue. When it comes to saving money on wedding accessories, something borrowed is the key.

A bride can easily save hundreds by not buying a veil, but borrowing her mother's veil instead. Or ditch the veil completely and go trendy with an inexpensive silk or fresh flower in the hair. Attach a hair comb to a grandmother's brooch and it can double as a beautiful vintage headpiece.

Wedding jewelry, the necklace, earrings and bracelet can really add up. Borrowing a loved one's pearls or diamonds is not just emotional, it's also economical.

Wedding shoes might look nice, but they are ridiculously expensive. $150- $200 easily for a pair of shoes, and they're not that comfortable. My advice, go to a regular shoe store during the summer to get a white pair of shoes, and you can wear them again.

As for a garter, make it yourself. If you can't sew, you probably know someone who does. It'll save $25 to $50 and when it comes to a wedding, the it's the little details that really add up.

Holmes learned when planning her own wedding recently, that this is the time when a bride really needs to reach out to her loved ones for help. Don't feel uncomfortable asking to borrow things, because those people really feel honored you're asking them to play to a part in your big day.
