BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) - In Monday's money saving segment, we're talking college. If your child got into Harvard, would you be able to afford it?
The answer may surprise you. There's a workshop that teaches you how to pay for your child's college of choice, without going broke, and the best part, it's free.
What could draw more than 40 parents out on a cold week day night?
How about a chance to learn how they can afford to send their child to college, even Harvard.
Attorney Steven Yeh has been teaching community education programs with the American Education foundation for 10 years.
"Our general message is confusing complex can appear to be expensive but if spend enough time with preparation generally education dream can be realized," said Steven Yeh.
For a dozen years, the foundation has been holding free workshops for parents of high school students, freshman through seniors.
"We're not for profit organization. Mission is to ensure college success by providing students and families with resources to better prepare for college," said Exec. Dir. AEF Gail Travers.
For example, you can't get in these days with just good grades and some extra curriculars, admissions officials want much more.
"They want to see commitment to one or two things rather than hodge podge of five or eight different things."
"That's secret, if know what type student you have, lot easier to find college that has good fit."
The workshops focuses on helping parents become financially prepared.
"I think most families that attend our program find though complex, are host of options usually thinking I'm going to pay all or child will not get in."
"Don't assume you as family will have to bear all cost. Do research early, map out options based on own circumstances lot times be surprised how much help get."
Stephen says many parents are also surprised at what helps and hurts families, such as assets, investments, 529's.
"That's what we focus in program is teach all options avail and how to co-ord options."
The workshops are held in the spring and fall, and the best part; "They are free to public as is followup session, where can meet with one advisors."
