BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) - A Buffalo Bills player arrested and tasered by police in
Cleveland is considering filing a lawsuit.
"I'm filing a lawsuit today against the Cleveland Police
Department," the star Bills player said as he left the Cleveland
City Jail Saturday morning.
The Buffalo Bills star known for his good work in the
community was tasered and arrested outside The House of Blues in
Cleveland over the weekend.
Saturday April 11, Whitner said, "This thing will come to
pass and the truth will come out and I will be proven innocent."
In this statement, Cleveland Police said "Officers attempting
to control the scene denied Whitner access to the area, at which
time he attempted to force his way past the officers in an
aggressive manner."
Police used the taser on Whitner "debilitating him enough
that officers were able to place him in handcuffs."
News 4's Jericka Duncan spoke to Whitner's Public Relations
manager Patrice Horton who was with him on the night of his arrest.
Horton said there is another side to the story, which she's been
advised not to talk about, at this time.
"What I can say is Donte is doing ok. He's enjoying this time
with his family. He's ready to get back to Buffalo and to get back
to work. He's in great spirits right now," Patrice said.
Cleveland Police could file formal charges against Whiter for
aggravated disorderly conduct and resisting arrest. Horton said
he'll return to Buffalo Tuesday.
"We appreciate all the support everyone has given him and the
organization. To the fans, keep him in your prayers, he's ready to
get back to work," said Horton.
