BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) - New York State is looking for people to help keep the peace in and outside area courtrooms.

The state is putting out the call for new court officers and there could be up to 100 openings in Western New York. City and State leaders rolled out their recruitment campaign Thursday morning at Niagara Square. Given the current state of the economy, they're expected to see a lot of applicants.

Officer trainees enter the academy with a starting base salary of just under $40,000 plus four weeks vacation and 12 paid holidays. Within two years, the salary jumps to almost $50,000.

"What this represents is an opportunity,” said Buffalo Mayor Byron Brown. “If you're not working now or not working in the kind of job you want to be in and don't fill out this application it just doesn't make sense. Filling out this application is an opportunity to get a great job."

"We know that we have the best hardest working public here in Western New York and we want to take advantage of what great people we have to incorporate them into our wonderful court system and you can become part of our court family as well," added State Supreme Court Justice Sharon Townsend.

Interested job seekers can send in their application from now until July 31st. An exam will take place this Fall. For more infomration to to apply online visit www.nycourts.gov/courtofficer-recruit
