Are you ready for the new school year? Do you know when it’s going to start?

School district openings vary by up to 9 days this year because of where Labor Day falls. It’s September 7, the latest it can occur.

Three western New York districts actually start classes for students on Tuesday the first: Elba, Portville and Grand Island. Many begin the second. The decisions are made by the Boards of Education of the individual districts.

The start date can have a ripple effect on the remainder of the school year. Districts that start early can either have longer vacations in February or April, or start with more days on the calendar to better protect against those inevitable snow days. Districts that start later allow students to get going on their education without being interrupted by a 3-day weekend.

News 4 has obtained the student start date from every Western New York district. Start dates are either for grades K through 12 or 1 through 12, with one exception. Batavia City Schools start for Pre-K through grade 5 plus grade 9 and transfers on the ninth, with other students beginning on the tenth.
