BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) - Police are seeking a female suspect in the shootings that critically wounded a man and woman and led to a car crash on St. Lawrence Avenue.

The two people who were shot underwent surgery at Erie County Medical Center, and the shooter, who neighbors believe to be a woman, is still on the run.

The call had come in to the police as an accident-injury on St. Lawrence Avenue, but police discovered that two people in the front seat of the black Chevy Impala had been shot.

Buffalo Police spokesman Mike DeGeorge said, "Two people, a male and a female. The male was the driver, female was the passenger. Both are in critical condition."

Both were rushed to the Erie County Medical Center, and a search began for the shooter, who was believed to have fired in the vicinity of where the car struck a tree.

The car had been seen cruising the block in recent weeks, according to one neighbor who did not want to be identified, "The car that was just in the accident with the young people in it is a vehicle that's been coming up and down the street quite a bit. It's very well known to see."

Neighbors were concerned about a shooter on the loose.

Lou Ann Klein said, "As far as we know, she's still on the loose. She could still have the gun still on her, and from my knowledge, they've locked down the community center. She she can't get in there."

The doors to the North Buffalo Community Center that serves children and the elderly, have been locked for hours.

Debbie Cielencki (North Buffalo Community Center) said, "We decided to lock down the community center to have everyone safe, because at this time, we have a lot of children coming for our after school program."

Police say they have secured the neighborhood. They are talking to many witnesses, and it's likely they know who they are chasing.
