The veteran law enforcer was found dead Tuesday morning, near his county car in the Town of Cold Spring.
Police say he had shot himself.
Undersheriff Timothy Whitcomb received a text message from John minutes before, with directions on where to find him.
"I looked up to him as a role model and truly one of my best friends and that empathy and sympathy is shared with everyone of my brothers and sisters within this agency," said Whitcomb.
Dennis John was the first Native American sheriff in New York State.
