BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) - The biggest challenge for job seekers is finding an opportunity,
getting the interview and not blowing it. Earlier this month
Victoria Hong emceed the 2008 Buffalo Niagara Human Resource
Association awards dinner.
She then took the opportunity to ask a few of the several
hundred HR specialists in attendance, a few key questions to help
anyone looking for a job.
First one, What's the best way to get an interview?
"The best way has been continues to be networking, if not out
talking to people not find jobs available," Bob Miller from RW
Miller Jr. & Assoc. said.
"The resume so important, must look prof., pulled together,
don't show gaps, or explain gap if have on resume," Kim Evans from
Ivoclar Vivodent, Inc. said.
The answer from another Ivoclar worker, this one from
Michelle Golding, was, "The resume. Let it be sharp, make a
statemtn with that, first piece of paper that comes across desk,
first visual."
Elizabeth Warren from Employer Services Corp. said,
"Networking is absolutely best way to get interview. Talking
with people who working or know someon in company interested in."
"I think going on LINKED IN, it's number one cource for
employees that's one biggest recruitment areas for all positions
nut just ech, but for any position in management," said Julia
Culkin, HR Synacor.
Tim Finney, Superior Staff Resources said, "Networking, by
far, traditional method of sending resumes, putting with everyone
else and no differentiation, best way let everyone know looking for
work, families, friends, ex-co-worker, make looking for interview a
full-time job."
The next question: How many times do you call for an
interview before you're a pest?
"If you're calling every day you're a pest, every week pest.
I say give employer 2 weeks to get back after initial send resume,
another 2 weeks, if not then probably not interested."
"Within 7-10 days call, don't want recruiter to forget about
you, very important."
"Is point cross the line, I would say don't call 2-3 times a
day."
"They call it telestalking, I think want to follow up, show
aggressive, if too much be seen as pest. I recommend follow
up phone call, if not, try email, then leave alone at that point."
"If in doubt, call daily too much, check in weekly basis or
ask, when appropriate time to check with you."
