BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) - People are looking for ways to stretch every dollar, especially
when it comes to food.
In this story 4 your Wallet, more western New Yorkers seem to
be getting a little help from an Angel.
Many prayers are being answered by this Saturday supermarket in
the basement of Cazenovia Park Baptist Church in Buffalo. The
church is the host site for Angel Food Ministry, a non-profit
organization which offers food at a greatly reduced cost, to people
of any income level.
Rev. Caimi of Buffalo said, "It's the program you want to
have. The food is fantastic. You get a lot for the money. And I
hate to say this. I don't want to go against the supermarkets, but
you can get better deals here from what I've seen."
Many church groups take advantage of the program to help the
faithful. Darlene Sims and Patricia Wooten are with the House of
Mercy in Buffalo. They're hoping to bring Angel Food Ministry a
little closer to the inner city.
"Because we have to come from Buffalo so it would be closer for
a lot of people there who can't come out here to get the packages,"
Darlene Sims, House of Mercy.
In these tough times, the need for savings is there.
The word is getting out. So we're expecting more people every
month and we expect it to increase. The increase is going to be
phenomenal," said Patricia Wooten, House of Mercy.
Angel Food Ministry, which has 4,500 host sites across the
nation, says it offers people a box of food that costs about 65
dollars for only $30.
We bring in a full semi truck filled with food. So I would say out of this location we're service a thousand people per month," said Paul Sperling of Cazenovia Park Baptist Church.
