BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) - A new state law aimed at protecting police and emergency workers takes effect January 1st.
Erie County Clerk Kathy Hochul said, "This is very important. It's something you should not take for granted. And if you fail to obey, there are consequences."
Hochul and local law enforcement announced the guidelines for the Move Over Act, Monday morning.
Drivers are required to safely slow down and move over when emergency vehicles and police cars are parked along a roadway.
The minimum fine for first-time offenders is $275.
