BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) - A new attraction will soon be sailing into Buffalo's inner harbor.
A ceremonial ship's wheel was presented to Captain Ric Hilliman, whose 19th century Great Lakes schooner replica The Spirit of Buffalo, is about to become a permanent attraction on Buffalo's waterfront.
Summer activities, including Fourth of July celebrations, drew large crowds to the inner harbor.
The schooner will provide visitors with a chance to experience the harbor from a new perspective.
Jordan Levy, Harbor Development Chairman, said, " It's going to give people a reason to come down and enjoy and experience the water and not just the land."
The Spirit of Buffalo will attract students from all over western New York and beyond, for a hands-on experience.
Hoisting the sails can be just one of many incredible experience for people of all ages. This was the Freedom Schooner Amistad, a recreation of the slave ship that was taken over by slaves. It's visit to Buffalo several years ago made lasting impressions. The Spirit of Buffalo is expected to have a similar impact.
"We think it can open up inner city kids and other kids for that matter to a whole new world.," said Buffalo Mayor Byron Brown.
"All of a sudden they realize, 'Wow! I just did that,' or 'Wow, I'm navigating this' and it's just very profound effect," said Kate Mini, of Buffalo Outdoor Education Foundation.
It may be as profound as a city finding its roots, as it experiences a "rebirth on the waterfront."
