CHEEKTOWAGA, N.Y. (WIVB) - Some travelers who were heading for Toronto made an unscheduled stop in western New York instead.
According to the Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority, six flights destined for Pearson Airport in Toronto were diverted to Prior Aviation behind Buffalo Niagara International Airport on Saturday. One flight was diverted to the Buffalo airport.
All of the flights diverted to Pior Aviationwere on Air Canada, according to Doug Hartmayer, spokesman for the NFTA. The flight diverted to the Buffalo airport was on Sunwing Airlines.
Three of the six flights Air Canada flights were supposed to be domestic, both taking off and landing in Canada. One was from Cuba. The two others originated in the United States. According to Air Canada’s website, one of those two flights originated in Boston. The NFTA did not state where the Sunwing flight came from.
Some of the planes had been circling, waiting to land because of a low visual ceiling at Pearson.
Planes had their restrooms pumped out and water supplied to them while in Cheektowaga, Hartmayer told News 4.
All of the affected airplanes were back in the air before 5:30 p.m. Saturday, according to Hartmayer.
No incidents resulting from the diverted landings were reported.
