BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) - How does where you shop affect your bill? News 4 went shopping
for six staple foods and compared their prices at four top local
grocers.
Our grocery list consisted of the following necessities, skim
milk, store-brand whole wheat bread, a dozen grade A large eggs, a
one pound, a four stick package of butter, a box of regular pasta,
and boneless skinless chicken breasts.
We compared the prices at Wegmans, Tops, Aldi's and
PriceRite. Here's what we found. The cost of a gallon of skim milk
was cheapest at Aldi's. At $1.89, it was 10 cents cheaper than
Wegmans and Pricerite. Tops was most expensive at $2.45, 2.15 with
a bonus card.
Pricerite had the cheapest bread at $.50, it was on sale from
$1.19 for a one pound loaf. That's the same cost per pound at
Wegmans,, which sells a larger loaf for $1.49.
A loaf just under a pound sold at Aldi's $1.19, that's $1.25
per pound. Tops was most expensive at $2.19, which was $1.75 per
pound.
Aldi's butter was cheapest at $1.39 a pound, Wegmans and
Pricerite were close at $1.49 a pound. Tops was almost a dollar
more at $2.69 a pound.
The price of eggs was very competitive. Aldi's everyday price
of 89 cents was cheapest with the other three charged 10 cents
more, though with a bonus card Tops cost was 79 cents.
The chicken varied in price and form. Aldi's may have been
the cheapest at 1.83 a pound, but it was frozen and
pre-bagged.
Pricerite was 1.99 a pound followed by 3.69 at Wegmans and
3.99 at Tops. Pricerite's pasta was cheapest per pound at 99 cents.
Aldi's sold for 10 cents more, followed by $1.25 per pound at
Tops. Pasta at Wegmans cost $1.19 per pound for the most part
though with some at $1.59.
