Santa Barbara County CA (CBS) - It’s been a very long night for firefighters battling a devastating wildfire in Southern California.
The out-of control blaze has already destroyed more than 100 homes and hundreds more remain in the line of fire.
California firefighters are racing to control a raging fire as another round of high winds rush in. The blaze has already torched at least 1500 acres and more than 100 homes in Santa Barbara county.
Evening winds called sundowners are expected to whip up even more blistery gusts, adding additional fuel to this dangerous fire.
More than a thousand fire crews are already battling the blaze and what they can't do from the ground, an army of choppers and air tanks are doing from the air.
Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger declared a state of emergency in Santa Barbara County as residents wait anxiously for word on their homes.
Jennifer Johnson got the chance to return home Friday only to find 10 years of memories, charred.
The fire also destroyed Mount Calvery Benedictine monastery home to a dozen monks. And at Westmont College nervous parents showed up to check on their kids. The school tucked in the hills of Montecito, suffered severe damage.
Some are calling this fire one of the worst this area has seen in 30 years and if firefighters have any chance to beat this blaze, the winds will need to stop working against them and start cooperating.
