ALBANY, NY - Gun season opens on Saturday, and hunters with permits will be allowed to take both deer and bears ranging from 50 to 300 pounds.
The New York State DEC is asking hunters to get a jump start on the season to keep bears out of cities like Buffalo, Rochester and Syracuse.
This will be the first time that the DEC is encouraging hunters to start shooting black bears on the first day of gun season, this Saturday. Previously there's been a week lag for the season for hunting bears.
With the opening of gun season hunters with permits will be allowed to take both deer and bears. Bears can range from 50 to 300 pounds.
