BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) - A Buffalo family that's been working to stop the violence has been hurt by a deadly act of violence itself.

61-year-old Joseph Washington was with a group of men near a gas station at Main and Glenwood Saturday night. Washington was hit by gunfire. He died earlier this week at ECMC.

At the time of the shooting, Washington's son-in-law was preparing to travel to the nation's capitol, as part of a mission to stop violence in the queen city. Now his grandson is preparing to take the trip.

Washington's daughter, Nona Holman, said, "He's still gonna take that van and go, my son will, and go to Washington. And now the only thing is, my dad's name will be added to that flag when they get to Washington, D.C."

A vigil for Washington will be held on Sunday evening. Police ask anyone with information on the shooting to call their confidential tipline at 847-2255.
