Murderer sentenced in cold case killing

BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) - A cold case came back to haunt a Buffalo man who's already serving life for murder. The victim's family has been seeking justice for almost 20 years.

53-year-old Frederick Wooten got five to 15 years for strangling Buffalo General Hospital co-worker Karyn Snead in her East Amherst Street home in 1993.

Wooten has been in prison for 14 years for the rape and murder of 30-year-old Denise Broughton in 1994. State Supreme Court Justice Penny Wolfgang called Wooten a violent person in court on Thursday. Several family members and friends of Karyn Snead were in court for the sentencing. Snead's brother addressed the court about the pain that is still felt by the family.

Barry Kennedy Vaughn said, "Our father has a very difficult time, had a very difficult time, driving to work passing by Forest Lawn Cemetery, knowing that his daughter was buried there. My father, who is 75, and my mother, who is 73, never imagined they would have to bury their daughter to a horrific ending to her life, a horrific ending to her life."

Vaughn went on to say that the family felt helpless throughout this ordeal, but also hopeful that their prayers would be answered.
