Two-alarm blaze at Buffalo scrap yard

BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) - Fire crews responded to a fierce fire fight in Buffalo, Monday morning.

Bright flames and thick black smoke filled the air at Gerdau Ameristeel Recycling. News 4 was told that the fire was in a scrap yard at Gerdau Ameristeel, which is an automobile shredder according to their website.

At the scene on Ohio Street, you could smell burning rubber and hear explosions Monday morning. A foam truck was on the scene, to help battle the blaze.

Chemicals being sent into the air are a concern for firefighters. Buffalo Fire Division Chief Don McFeely said, “I could see the smoke colors, probably all kinds of stuff in the pile. Mostly it’s scraps, maybe some plastics, tires are probably in the pile. I guess what happens is when the junkers come in they bring a lot of junk, whatever this recycling company uses they pull out of the pile and a lot of stuff goes in the junk pile, that’s what is burning right now.”

Firefighters say if you live in the Ohio Street area you should shut your windows and try to stay inside if possible.
