BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) - It was an opportunity for BlueCross BlueShield of WNY members to feel like a Sabre for the day at their annual family skating event.
The event gave members free access to the ice rink at the First Niagara Center where 600 skaters took advantage of the family fun event.
However, many eyes were on two specific skaters as a special moment was about to unfold in front of everyone.
Cate Zulewski from BlueCross BlueShield said, “We did have a member call us and let us know he's proposing to his girlfriend on the center ice today.”
Kevin Fleck and Megan Paluch’s relationship started with a Sabres connection when she spotted his photo on a dating website.
“He had a picture of him and Rick Jeanneret and I was like oh, that's so cool you met Rick Jeanneret, and it went from there,” said Megan.
During their year and a half courtship, Kevin taught Megan how to skate giving the ice special meaning to the couple.
Kevin was meaning to propose soon, and when the opportunity for the free skate at First Niagara presented itself, he knew what he had to do.
When a song that had special meaning started to play during the skating event, Kevin got down on one knee and she said, yes.
“I was confident she'd say yes. But I was afraid of falling right as I got to one knee. My fear was taking a nose plant on center ice right as I went to do it,” said Kevin.
The happy couple took the opportunity to feel like a Sabre for a day as well as to create a moment on the Sabres’ ice that they will remember for a lifetime.
