Couple welcomes first baby of new year

BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) - As people across the world celebrated the arrival of 2013, some local families were celebrating the arrival of new additions to their families.

Dr. Mark and Danielle Matesich welcomed western New York's first baby of the new year. At 12:07 Tuesday morning, Haley Elli came into the world at Buffalo's Women and Children's Hospital.

"My water broke the 27th so I was in labor a very long time," Danielle said.

Mark said, "We gave her about four or five days to come and she decided to hang on until the new year."

Dr. Matesich is a chiropractor. He says he and his wife used chiropractic techniques to help during labor.

We had a lot of great help from massage therapists and acupuncture and a midwife. A lot of great therapies helped us get through the whole process," Mark said.

Little Haley was born at 8 pounds, 3 ounces. And when she made her debut, her parents weren't the only ones celebrating.

Mark said, "She came in with the entrance of the fireworks going off outside."

Nicole Martinez had the first baby born at Buffalo's Sisters of Charity Hospital at 12:30 Tuesday morning. The baby's due date was January 12th, but little Jalina Lee had other plans. Atlin Gonzalez translated for Martinez.

"She's happy, emotional, she says, 'Thank you, God,'" Gonzalez said.

Jalina Lee weighed in at 7 pounds 2, ounces. Martinez says she can't wait to get her little girl home to meet her big sister.
