BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) - One of the city's first school crossing guards received a major honor Tuesday.

Mayor Byron Brown declared Tuesday "Jane Ervin Day" in Buffalo. She has served as a school crossing guard for 60 years.

Ms. Janes, as she was known to generations of students, was one of the first crossing guards in the Queen City. Right now she is stationed at the corner of High Street and Ershing Avenue.

She has a lot of memories of the kids through the years, making sure they got to school safely. She also recalls the day the Blizzard of '77 hit.

"I remember that big snow storm that came, caught us all off guard, when the kids couldn't get home from school. We were all out looking for our children. Every bus come along, we couldn't find our children. Now that wasn't a good day," Ervin remembered.

She says she is crossing the children of kids she used to protect years ago. She tells News 4 she plans to keep working as long as she feels up to the task.
