"It Gets Better" co-creator at Canisius

BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) - A man who has made it his mission to empower people struggling with their sexuality brought his message to Buffalo Thursday night.

People may not recognize his name, but chances are you've heard his three words of comfort: "It Gets Better." The co-creator of the campaign, Dan Savage, spoke to a packed house Thursday night at the Montante Cultural Center at Canisius College.

His campaign asks people around the world to make short videos with encouraging messages for lesbian, gay, bi-sexual and transgendered youth and upload them to the internet. Savage says he knows the struggle many LGBT teens face every day because he lived it.

"Things get better. There are a lot of kids out there, LGBT kids who don't know that. Who have been told horrifying lies about who they are. That they're sick and sinful and perverse. They've been told their families will never love or accept them. Their homophobic families will never come around," Savage said.

Williamsville teen Jamey Rodemeyer made his own "It Gets Better" video shortly before he took his own life after years of bullying.

After his death, many of us at News 4 made our own "It Gets Better" videos. You can watch them, and others, on our Bully Project page.
