Kids taught dangers of sugary treats

BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) - A new project kicked off on Wednesday to teach students in a Buffalo school that too much sugar can be dangerous to their health.

"The Hidden Sugar Project" started this year's Fitness for Kids Challenge at the Dr. George E. Blackman School of Excellence. Students were given a theatrical look at what happens to your body when you consume too much sugar.

Organizers from Independent Health say it's important for children to get proper nutrition, to reduce obesity - a big problem these days.

Rep. Carrie Meyer said, "We want to encourage children to start drinking healthier drinks. One hundred percent fruit juice, low fat milk and water. Eating a healthy rainbow is something really great for the kids to do, and there's so many great fruits and vegetables that are out there."

Wednesday's event in Buffalo launches the fifth year of the Fitness for Kids Challenge sponsored by the Independent Health Foundation. It runs from now through next May.
