Man creates art out of blocks of ice

BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) - It may be cold outside, but there was a warm feeling at Roswell Park Friday night as everyone gathered for an outdoor celebration to light the Tree of Hope.

Deep-rooted traditions like horse-drawn carriage rides, caroling, and a parade with Santa and Mrs. Claus create the foundation of the Roswell Park Hope Tree of Hope lighting.

Roswell Park Deputy Director Dr. Candace Johnson said, "People that are struggling with cancer, it's a time to reflect and have a happy moment if you will."

And there's always room for more holiday magic. This year Paul Strada, his chainsaw, his 300 pound blocks of ice, and his imagination will be part of the tree lighting.

News 4 caught up with Strada as he was creating an ice sculpture for the World's Largest Disco. Starting with just a hand-drawn pattern, Strada irons it on to the ice, and then carefully carve out the pieces.

He's perfected the art over the last 17 years, traveling around the world, competing in prestigious competitions. He's created masterpieces like a Buffalo ice throne, a magical castle, and even the Eiffel Tower!

Strada said, "It's a tremendous feeling to be challenged with something and to see that you could make it happen after a number of hours of work."

Friday night he'll be turning two blocks of ice, one of which was graciously donated by Ice is Nice, into a gingerbread house.

"We've designed a little house, with some candy canes and some little doors and windows. It'll be really cute," explained Strada.

He says perfect weather for his craft is 25 degrees and dry. Can he deal with whatever snowball Old Man Winter throws his way? Strada joked, "I live for that." He added, "It's a great opportunity to help out and do what we can help Roswell in whatever way we can."

Who knew ice could warm so many hearts?
