Officer shoots man during domestic call

BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) - A Buffalo Police officer opened fire on a man during a domestic violence call, marking the sixth officer-involved shooting in the city this year.

At about 4 p.m. on Wednesday, C-District officers were called to a home on Walden Avenue where witnesses say an ex-boyfriend was arguing with a woman. We shaded woman who spoke to News 4's face to protect her identity in the attached video.

She said, "He basically hit her mother and hit her sister, hit her and they got into a fight, so we locked him out of the house. He had a firearm."

Witnesses say he ran from the house as police told him to stop and drop his gun.

"He didn't stop," the witness said. "So, you know, he was shot by the police. I don't think they had to shoot him because of how many [officers] there were."

This is the sixth time a Buffalo Police officer has shot a suspect in just over six months. Two of those suspects died. In this case, the man was shot once in the knee after refusing to drop his gun.

News 4 asked the witness if he was pointing the gun at officers, and she said, "He just had it in his hand."

A statement from Buffalo Police says the gunshot wound is not believed to be life threatening, and that homicide detectives and internal affairs are investigating, which is standard procedure whenever an officer fires a weapon while responding to an incident.
