BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) - October is fire prevention month, and local firefighters are making sure you're prepared in case of an emergency.

Monday night, the City of Buffalo hosted the first in a series of fire hall open houses. Firefighters are giving out free smoke detectors and batteries - devices that could save lives.

Mayor Byron Brown said, "The importance is being preventive and being fire safe. Having a way for the family, having an evacuation plan if there's a fire or an emergency at the house."
