BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) - Parents in Buffalo got a chance Tuesday night to weigh in on a new student code of conduct for the 2013-2014 school year.
The new code would end out-of-school suspensions for many non-violent offenses. Many parents have been pushing for this since June of 2010, when Lafayette High School freshman J'Waan Daniels was shot and killed at a bus stop an hour after he was suspended for loitering in the halls.
Sherry Byrnes of Citizen Action of NY and Alliance for Quality Education said, "In many cases there are other ways to deal with it, unless it is a really extreme example. Suspension or expulsion should be a last resort, not a first resort."
The Alliance for Quality Education says an average of 41 students are suspended in Buffalo every day.
