BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) - How safe is the air around the Peace Bridge?

Wednesday night, the Buffalo Westside Environmental Defense Fund stepped forward with new information about the harmful effects of emissions from idling trucks. One medical researcher says he's uncovered a direct link between certain airborne particles and high rates of asthma on the west side.

"And these particles we associated with high risk of asthma and it's actually not only asthma but we find that they are associated with a whole lot of illnesses that we never thought would be associated with them," Dr. Jemson Lwebuga-Mukasa said.

New rules now require drivers to turn off their engines while waiting to cross into Canada. The DEC is testing the air around the bridge plaza.
