ALBANY, NY -  Legislation requiring manufacturers of computers and other electronic gear to accept old equipment for recycling in New York has passed in the state Senate.

The measure to reduce so-called "electronic waste" is backed by Gov. David Paterson and was approved by the Assembly earlier on Friday. It will require manufacturers selling computers, televisions and digital music players in the state to accept equipment for recycling starting on April 1.

Consumers buying a piece of new equipment will be able to bring in a similar used product for recycling.

Manufacturers will pay a registration fee, file annual reports and face surcharges for failure to meet goals.

The measure also increases some fees for generating hazardous waste.
