BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) - Hundreds of jobs are at stake here in Buffalo as New Era Cap ponders plant closings in a slow economy.

The plant in Derby will compete with a facility in Alabama for all the remaining work.

New Era Cap Company opened its doors in Western New York in 1920. It is one of the few remaining home grown companies here.

Karen Erickson of the Evans Town Board said, "For a town like ours that doesn't have a lot of business, to lose a business tax-wise is certainly harmful, but for our community, those are jobs that won't be replaced."

The company plans to close its facilities in Mobile and Jackson, Alabama, but the future of Demopolis and Derby remain uncertain.

The company says only one can remain open.

"It's a combination of factors, obviously. Like everyone out there we've been feeling the effects of the economic downturn," said Pete Augustine, New Era Cap President.

Evans Town Supervisor Fran Pordum says the town is prepared to do whatever it can to keep New Era from closing this plant.

"One of the pilots that were given for the new equipment to put in the plant has just run out. So I'm sure we will continue, we will look at all these various aspects to see if we can put together a package," said Pordum.

Workers hope that package comes through.

They were so distraught over Thursday's announcement that New Era officials closed all three plants so they could take it in.

"Many of these people have worked there their whole lives and their parents worked there," explained Erickson.
