BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) - We all know what a bar code is, but how about a QR code? QR stands for quick response and it could be the next new thing in retailing.

Google's Daniel Switkin said, "I think QR codes are a way to learn more about the things in front of you. QR codes are like weblinks to the real world and they're a lot faster than typing on mobile phones."

QR codes have been used in Japan for years. When scanned by a cell phone, they provide a link to a web page and additional information. In Europe, QR codes can be seen on buildings as well as on products like sodas.

Switkin said, "I think QR codes are becoming more popular in the U.S. They're showing up on more products more stores."

Barcodes that can be scanned with cell phones are now showing up in magazines and in stores. At Norma Kamali in New York, QR codes are everywhere. By scanning the codes, customers can learn about the styles.

Kamali explained, "The information you gather as you go through the story stays with you so when you leave you have all the information about the styles that you were interested in."

A scan of this outfit's QR code will link you to a music video in which Beyonce is wearing the item and QR codes can give a new meaning to the idea of "window shopping."

"If there's a style in the window that you really like, customers can shop directly from the barcode. So if it's after six, you can shop without anybody and do it on your own," said Kamali.
