ELMA, N.Y. (WIVB) - A woman in Elma is concerned about potholes on her road. Potholes can seriously damage a car over time, and that was Bonnie Thiel's biggest concern when she called for action.
A ride on the Bullis Road Bridge in Elma can be a bone jarring experience due to the potholes and an uneven road surface at this expansion joint.
Bonnie said, "It's really bad. There's holes all over the place.
Potholes on the bridge and other stretches of Bullis Road prompted Bonnie to call for action.
"It is in horrible conditions, it's just terrible. I feel so sorry for the people that are just going to work, coming home from work. This is not just for me, this is for everybody that travels this road," said Bonnie.
Shortly after we made our first phone calls on the Bullis Road potholes, county work crews put up these electronic signs notifying drivers help is on the way.
But there's more. A couple of miles down the road, in Marilla there are more potholes, but a lot worse. But here, the county has heaped patches on top of patches. You can tell the county has spent a lot of time and effort patching the potholes because along side the road is gravel from old patches that have fallen apart.
Public Works Commissioner Gerard Sentz told News 4 that they suspect underground springs are eroding the road bed, and they are planning to emergency repairs within a few weeks.
"Dig the pavement out and the curb gutter that's out there, put some under drain in there so that the water will move away from the pavement. And then we'll restore the pavement," explained Sentz.
But drivers on Bullis Road will have a price to pay. The bridge closes Monday, and is expected to remain closed for a month, so you will have to scope an alternate route to get to where you are going.
