BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) - It is a celebration of all that western New York has to offer.

Two job fairs were held Friday in conjunction with Citybration, in hopes of keeping the best and brightest in the area.

Despite the dismal economy, some Buffalo-based companies are hiring.

Tony Blasting of Northwestern Mutual said, "We are hiring for financial advisors."

Michael Weekes hopes to make a connection. He wants to move from Florida back home to Buffalo.

Weekes said, "Well I'm looking for a role in continuous improvement. I'm a six sigma black belt."

Why does he want to return to western New York?

Weekes said, "I've never met and found a community as genuine."

The job fair was set up as part of Buffalo's annual homecoming called "Citybration," a four day event that showcases opportunities to lure former residents back, and keep others, like Vashawn Jones, from leaving.

How much does it mean for him to stay here?

Jones said, "I'm trying to leave, (for a) better opportunity."

Event organizer Marti Gorman says it's people like a young mom who they want to retain.

Gorman said, "She thinks she needs to leave. She's better off staying here. Buffalo is an excellent place to ride out the recession."

Close to 400 families have relocated to Buffalo in recent years after attending Citybration.

This year, the event also features a video that puts the spotlight on the people and places that make the region special.

The fun extends well beyond Buffalo with similar events being held in Niagara County.

Gorman said, "This is an idea that's spreading. It's a good thing to shout about success, put the spotlight on what's good in a community."

Citybration continues through Sunday.

Weekes is excited, knowing his visit could lead to a possible job opportunity that will bring him back home.
