BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) - A 16-year-old boy is dead after being shot around 4:20 p.m. on Friday on Deer Street and Hertel Avenue in Buffalo.
Riverside High School student Lewis Adams was gunned down in front of his home. As news of the shooting spread Friday, groups of dismayed mourners arrived at the scene to be near one another.
Buffalo Police Chief of Detectives Dennis Richards tells News 4 that Lewis was getting into a car when he was targeted. Police say it was not a random attack.
"The young boy was about to enter a vehicle when another car pulled up, a gunman jumped out, began firing multiple shots and the victim was struck multiple times. This individual was targeted; there's no doubt about that," Richards said.
Police say at least two, possibly three people were in the vehicle.
The driver of the white car Lewis was trying to get into took off when bullets started flying. Police later picked up the car on Thompson Street a few blocks away. If you look at the photos with this story, you can see pictures of the car and bullet holes in its side.
Richards said, "Right now, we're looking for a black Pontiac Grand Am. We believe the suspect jumped into that vehicle with other people driving and that vehicle had fled the scene traveling eastbound on Hertel."
This is the 45th murder in Buffalo this year.
"Last year was a low number for homicide total. This year, we're gaining by a few," Richards said. "We track every homicide and we try to investigate every one and make an arrest as often as we can. This particular area is a quieter area."
Authorities are looking for the public's help. If you have any information, call the confidential tipline at 847-2255.
