Two hit by gunfire, one person dead

BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) - In broad daylight on Buffalo's west side, gunfire from a passing van killed a man on 18th Street and wounded a woman in the arm.

Porches along 18th Street were filled with people watching police investigate the murder of a man in his mid-20s.

Chief of Detectives Dennis Richards said, "Someone fired from a blue minivan and fled the scene."

Police say a woman in her 20s was also shot in the arm.

"I've heard that she's pregnant, I am not sure what term, but I can't confirm or deny that right now," Richards said.

David Anderson, who lives on the west side, said, "That really just sickens me. And not only that, it disturbs me how we can kill each other, how we can shoot a pregnant woman. Who would even shoot a woman to begin with?"

The month of May has seen a high number of shootings, but Buffalo Police note the number is on target with last year.

"These aren't just cold, hard statistics - these are people whose lives are affected and loved ones are left behind," Richards said.

Resident Augustine Gilchrist said, "I am not afraid to live here; I am just saddened that this is going on. This is two in less than five days."

This shooting is just blocks from where a 19-year-old was shot and killed on Saturday along Massachusetts and Shields.

Police say it is now up to the public to help find the killer.

Richards urged, "It's not the police who solve, it's the people who come forward, who have the courage to come forward and give us information."

Anyone with information can call the confidential tip line at 847-2255.
