BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) - First responders rushed to the aide of a Buffalo Police detective, shot during an hours-long standoff in Allentown that also saw the suspect killed in a hail of gunfire.
A lot has happened in a very short time and detectives continue to try and sort it all out. They continue to investigate the five-hour standoff that left a lot of people on edge.
Detective John Garcia was shot by pellets in the face and shoulder. He and others arrived on the scene at 57 Trinity Place around 10:30 a.m. after a call came in to check on the welfare of an individual who had apparently barricaded himself inside.
A few hours later, News 4 heard a rapid series of gunshots and then what appeared to be two flash bangs within a few minutes. Though it isn't clear what happened, we're told the SWAT team moved in just around then and located the deceased lone gunman on the second floor. Regardless of what went on, the standoff lasted around five hours and terrified a number of people.
"I heard one big pop and I ducked and started running this way towards Elmwood and as I got in front of the church, it was like, machine gun fire," said resident Jeff Witek.
Chief Detective Dennis Richards said, "The standoff continued for two more hours and approximately 2:45 this afternoon the SWAT team was able to enter and clear the house. The lone male in the upper apartment was found deceased as well as a shotgun nearby."
The identity of the suspect has not been made public. Two investigations are now underway into this incident.
