LACKAWANNA, N.Y. (WIVB) - The night before Thanksgiving is traditionally one of the busiest bar nights of the year, and police were out in force last night to prevent tragedies on the roads.
This DWI checkpoint was set up on Route 5 in Lackawanna.
There were several other "Stop DWI" sobriety checks conducted by local police agencies around Erie County.
Authorities say checkpoints like this one serve as a deterrent to keep drunk drivers off the road.
Lieutenant Christopher Lalka of the Lackawanna Police said, "To keep the people that are obeying the law, with their, designated drivers, safe and hopefully make it a safer commute home for those people."
Police tell News 4 they made at least one DWI arrest at that checkpoint overnight.
