BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) - The Child Passenger Protection Act, more commonly referred to as Leandra's Law, is being used aggressively by police agencies and prosecutors in Erie County.
The crime of Aggravated Driving While Intoxicated with a Child, even when it is a first-time offense, is a class E felony punishable up to four years in state prison.
On January 21, 24-year-old Michelle Crawford was indicted for Aggravated Driving While Intoxicated with a Child and Endangering the Welfare of a Child. Allegedly, Crawford drove while intoxicated while her three children were in the vehicle.
On January 22, 35-year-old Tamara Sloan was indicted for Aggravated Driving While Intoxicated with a Child and Endangering the Welfare of a Child. Allegedly, Sloan drove while intoxicated with her two children in the car, which became involved in a crash.
Also on January 22, 43-year-old Jolie Norse pleaded guilty, as charged, to Aggravated Driving While Intoxicated with a Child. Ms. Norse drove while intoxicated with her three children and one foster child, in the vehicle. Nourse will be sentenced in April.
