EAST AURORA, N.Y. (WIVB) - It's called the world's oldest profession, with a 21st century twist. Two East Aurora women are now accused of selling themselves online.
When you think of prostitution, people generally think of street walkers with cash-only policies, but as East Aurora police learned, it's a whole different day and new way of advertising.
Online escort services are legal, and why not? It's not a crime to pay for a little companionship. But East Aurora Police Detective Richard Daminski says that's not always what goes on as he found out during an undercover sting.
"I couldn't believe it," said Det. Daminski.
55-year-old Cynthia Betschen and 42-year-old Onsa Glosser now stand accused of prostitution. They didn't know each other, but investigators say they both advertised on Escorts.com for escort services as well as other types of sexual favors.
They were busted in recent weeks after allegedly taking cash from an undercover officer posing as a client for the purposes of sex. Sex toys and condoms were among the evidence confiscated.
Det. Daminski said, "A lot of people say prostitution is a victimless crime, but what happens if she goes somewhere? An assault can occur."
A concerned parent who learned of the website tipped off investigators. A search of the site turned up about 100 local escorts. Nowadays, their clients even post reviews.
"It was right there, like going shopping for an item," said Det. Daminski.
The website warns of adult content and that it's not set up for prostitution. While Onsa, aka Kimbo, lives in a modest house apartment, Cynthia, aka Hot Cindy, resides in a more upscale home. Police say both women made a lot of money turning tricks: $1,000 for a full day, $2,000 for an overnight.
"Be careful, it's out there, it's happening. I just hate to see anyone get hurt," said Det. Daminski.
We tried to contact both women about the allegations, but there was no answer at their homes. They are scheduled to return to court on separate dates in the next two weeks.
