Rich Newberg took stand in McCray trial

BUFFALO, NY (WIVB) - Riccardo McCray introduced himself to western New York for the first time when he surrendered to police and News 4 Senior Corespondent Rich Newberg at the Channel 4 studios last summer.

Today Rich Newberg and McCray were once again in the same room. Newberg was called to the stand to testify about the day the murder suspect turned himself in and all that was said and caught on camera.

Newberg was called as a Prosecution witness today. On the stand, he was asked if he called authorities when he knew McCray, who was wanted by police as a "person of interest" at the time, was coming to the News 4 studios. Newberg answered, "Not my role; not an agent of police."

Defense attorney Joseph Terranova asked Newberg if he thinks he took advantage of Riccardo McCray and Newberg said, "No, I do not think we took advantage of Mr. McCray."

Newberg's testimony comes just a day after a rider in the alleged getaway car, Gerry Davis, testified that he saw McCray shoot one victim in the back of the head and that McCray would eventually vommit in the getaway car.

When asked by Prosecutor James Bargnesi if there was any question that McCray was the shooter, Davis replied, "No sir."

As we mentioned, News 4's Rich Newberg was called to the stand. We were told that the interview Newberg conducted with McCray in August at News 4 was being played in the courtroom for the jurors to view.
