BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) - A school assistant principal needed medical attention Wednesday, after police say he stepped in to stop a fight between a male and female student at the Buffalo Alternative High School.

Buffalo Teachers Federation President Phil Rumore alerted News 4 to the incident , while covering another story Friday . He said,  “A student beat up the assistant principal and punched him in the face. He may have a broken nose. It was a violent occurrence."

RELATED | Just recently, a teacher was injured breaking up a fight at Riverside High School and another teacher went to the hospital after being kicked in the head by a second grader at School 90

Buffalo Police Spokesperson Mike DeGeorge says the principal was hit a couple of times. He went to the hospital, and no charges have been filed against the student. DeGeorge says the school took disciplinary action against the male.

Rumore says school should consistently do safety drills to practice what to do if a student or outside intruder tries to harm anyone in the school.

In Response to an altercation at School #44 in which an Assistant Principal
was injured, the District statement is as follows:

Statement from Buffalo Public Schools:

In the event that an administrator witnesses a physical altercation between students, it is the district’s expectation that he or she will immediately call for help and take appropriate measures to provide intervention that does not endanger their safety or that of others.

The District accepts the responsibility for keeping both students and staff safe at all times.  Students who engage in an altercation that leads to physical harm to any other person will face the appropriate consequences for their actions pursuant to the District Code of Conduct.
