Buffalo, NY (WIVB) - University Police at Buffalo State College are investigating the sexual assault of a female student, inside a residence hall on campus.

The student reported to police that a man sexually assaulted her inside Porter Hall around 2:18 Saturday morning.

"We've been actively pursuing our investigation, and as a result of that, we've come up with a person of interest," Buffalo State Police Chief Peter Carey told News 4.

An alert about the sexual assault was sent out to Buffalo State students Saturday. But Carey was quick to note, "There is no threat to the campus community; to the resident students, or the students, faculty and staff at Buffalo State."

"The residence halls are viewed as the students' home, and obviously there's a higher level of safety and precaution and comfort that goes along with the residence halls. That's important to the students, and it's also important to us," said Carey.

"We want the students who live in Porter Hall, and the other students on campus, to realize that there is no threat to their safety.

The victim was taken to the hospital for medical treatment and counseling.

Police are continuing their investigation. No further information on the person of interest was immediately available.

Anyone with information about this crime is asked to contact University Police at 878-6333, or by dialing extension 6333 on-campus.
