Clues sought in superintendent's murder

CLYMER, N.Y. (WIVB) - Police continue to comb for clues in the small, rural community of Clymer, where the school superintendent was shot multiple times.

Keith Reed, Jr. was found Monday 100 yards from his house on Clymer-Sherman Road. The well-liked superintendent had been hit by several gunshots, though authorities will not say what type of gun was used. Right now, the Chautauqua County Sheriff and District Attorney are not saying if they have any suspects or what evidence they have recovered.

Sheriff Joseph Gerace said, "We're searching every inch of the property, looking for anything that may be related to the crime."

Reed was last heard from Friday evening. By Sunday, when his friends were unable to get ahold of him, they entered his home. Discovering he was not there, they called police. Authorities would not find his body until Monday with the help of a K-9 unit.

Investigators have been in contact with Cattauraugus County investigators to compare notes on a similar murder Friday night in Great Valley.  Henry Ackley was shot to death in his home. The sheriff says the murder is not likely to be related to Reed's killing, but it has not been ruled out.

"We're looking at everything that could be related. We have several agencies working with us, including the FBI and the State Police," Sheriff Gerace commented.

Reed grew up Salamanca and his father served as mayor in the 60s and 70s. Outside the school in Clymer, the flag flew at half staff in honor of the superintendent. The district released a statement offering their condolences to his friends and family. Grief counselors will be at the school throughout the week.
