BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) - A rape University Police say happened during a party on the Buffalo State College campus has prompted extra vigilance.
The Moore apartment complex allows three or four students to room together, sharing common living space. Early Saturday morning in one of the rooms, a female undergraduate student was raped during a party where alcohol was served, according to campus Police Chief Peter Carey.
"She called us. We responded, had her transported to Erie County Medical Center for treatment and evaluation," Chief Carey said.
A campus alert was immediately sent saying: "A female Buffalo State student was the victim of a sexual assault." By Saturday afternoon it was updated to say that "University Police...identified a person of interest."
Chief Carey said, "We do have a person of interest in our investigation at this point. We've spoken to that person and we've also taken our statement and gotten information from the victim.
Campus Police are now working with the Erie County District Attorney's office for the next course of action. Students are urged to be more careful.
There are 43 "blue light" emergency telephones on the Buffalo State Campus, but authorities say students must look out for each other and not take anything for granted, even at a campus party.
"Make sure that you know where your friends. Make sure if you don't see them, you check to see they're not in trouble. If someone's becoming overly intoxicated, make sure you take care of them and get them back safely," Chief Carey said.
News 4 is told the student did not know the man who allegedly raped her, and Chief Carey says the man had attended the party. He would not say if the man is a Buffalo State student.
