BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) - A domestic disturbance Wednesday led to the sixth Buffalo police officer to be involved in a shooting so far this year.

The situation began as a domestic disturbance call involving an armed suspect, who police have identified as 19-year-old Lamont Cooper. Police say Cooper is in serious condition Thursday morning.

C-District Police responded to a home at 935 Walden Avenue. A witness inside the home told News 4 that an ex-boyfriend began arguing with a woman. We have blurred the woman's face in the attached video to protect her identity.

The witness said, "He basically hit her mother and hit her sister, hit her and they got into a fight, so we locked him out of the house. He had a firearm."

Police say the man then ran from the house. Officers caught up to him approximately two blocks away.

Chief of Detectives Dennis Richards says the suspect, "apparently reached for the weapon several times, placing the officer in imminent fear for his life."

An officer then opened fire, hitting Cooper in the upper leg.

The witness who spoke to News 4 said, "He didn't stop so, you know, he was shot by the police.”  But she does not think the shooting was necessary.  She said, “I don't think they had to shoot him because of how many there were."
