Could boy's murder have been prevented?

BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) - The case of a 10-year-old Buffalo boy found beaten to death in his family’s basement is raising questions. When did the alleged abuse begin? Could something have been done before he was killed?

Since 2010, at least two domestic related calls were made from 10-year-old Abdifatah Mohamud’s Buffalo home.

Buffalo Police Spokesperson Mike DeGeorge confirms an internal investigation is now underway to make sure all the proper procedures were followed by police, when they responded to the calls.

Police found the 10-year-old boy's body in his basement, tied up, gagged and beaten to death . His stepfather, Somali immigrant 40-year-old Ali Mohamed Mohamud, was arrested for second-degree murder in his stepson's death.

  >>  The boy's neighborhood was left shocked, after finding out about his murder

Wednesday at the 5th grader's school, International Prep in Buffalo, News 4 spoke to the principal. Principal Kevin Eberle said there have been a lot of rumors about Abdifatah speaking to classmates about abuse, but many students don’t want to get involved and speak out.

Eberle said, “We’re hearing different things. Different students are saying ‘yea, there are stories from last year,’ that he came into school with a black eyes, but they are blaming fights and stuff that was in the press.”

Those rumors stem from Abdifatah's time attending Universal School in Buffalo, before he enrolled at International Prep.

Buffalo Police Spokesperson Mike DeGeorge said, “The police commissioner ordered an investigation to look into the matter, to look into police involvement in this matter to see was everything done right was anything missed?"
